Firefighters quickly extinguish house fire
By Allison Scarbrough, News Editor
FERRY TOWNSHIP — Firefighters from three departments quickly extinguished a house fire at 2491 E. Pierce Road Monday night, Feb. 19.
The blaze, which was dispatched shortly before 7 p.m., appeared to have originated in the basement of the two-story home, said Ferry Township Fire Department Cpt. Chris Ernst. “From what we can tell, it started in the basement, but the cause is still undetermined,” Ernst said at the scene. “It made its way to the first floor. We were able to get in and get it knocked down pretty quick.”
Despite smoke and water damage, it appears the house can be salvaged, he said. It was not immediately known if the house is insured.
Three adults escaped the home unharmed, and the American Red Cross was called to assist the residents with temporary housing and other needs. Their pets also escaped unharmed, said Ernst. “Everybody is safe and accounted for.”
The home is located between 132nd and 144th avenues.
Ferry, Walkerville and Hesperia fire departments responded to the scene, along with Grant Township Fire Department’s rehab trailer. Also assisting were Life EMS, Great Lakes Energy and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters cleared the scene around 9:15 p.m.
