Winter weather advisory in effect until noon Sunday

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a winter weather advisory that remains in effect until noon Sunday, Jan. 14.

The advisory area includes Oceana, Mason, Lake, Newaygo, Montcalm and Clinton counties.

NWS issued the advisory Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11:30 a.m. The winter storm warning is canceled for this area.

Lake effect snow showers creating additional snow accumulations of 2-6 inches are predicted, along with winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

“Plan on slippery road conditions,” states NWS. “Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Wind chill temperatures will fall to zero to 10 below tonight. Slow down and use caution while traveling. Accumulating snow today and tonight, as well as strong winds, will keep travel hazardous. Occasional whiteout conditions can be expected due to blowing snow.

“Arctic air will result in wind chills in the -10 to -20 degree range Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Frostbite will be possible within 30 minutes on exposed skin. Lake effect snow showers are likely much of next week. Additional accumulating snow and travel impacts are possible, especially along the lakeshore.”

Counties to the south of Oceana County — including Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Allegan, Barry, Van Buren and Kalamazoo — remain under a winter storm warning until noon Sunday.
