Jackknifed semi on US 31 spills hundreds of gallons of fuel

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A semi truck jackknifed on northbound US 31 near Stony Lake Road during a snowstorm Monday, Dec. 18, around 10 a.m., spilling hundreds of gallons of fuel.

The driver, who is a 42-year-old Akron, Ohio woman, sought treatment for minor injuries at Trinity Health Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby following the crash, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

“(The 2021 Volvo semi) was northbound on US 31 in the snow and wind,” states the report. “The driver lost control of the vehicle, and it spun out into the ditch. The trailer came unhooked from the tractor. The tractor then got pinned between the embankment and the trailer, spilling fuel.”

“As a result of the crash, both saddle tanks were ruptured, causing several hundred gallons of fuel to enter the ground on the shoulder of the freeway,” states Eagle Towing Director of Operations Andrew Heykoop in a follow-up report. Eagle Towing responded to the scene to tow the wreckage and clean up the site.
