CTE Allied Health students place in regional competition

SAGINAW — Students from West Shore Educational Service District’s Career & Technical Education’s Allied Health program recently competed in a Regional Leadership Conference at Saginaw Valley State University. The HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America/Future Health Professionals) competition included 890 participants from Michigan Region 7 which covers career and technical programs and schools from the upper half of the Lower Peninsula.
Sixteen students participated in competitive events in categories that included medical spelling, medical terminology, physical therapy, forensic science, CPR/First Aid, and phlebotomy. Of the 16, seven placed in the top seven of their events:
- Phlebotomy – Karly Gokey, Ludington High School, second place
- Phlebotomy – Ava Hoekwater, LHS, third place
- Phlebotomy – Katelynn McNeeley, Baldwin High School, fourth place
- Medical terminology – Makenna Anible, LHS, sixth place.
- Medical spelling – Grace Sherwood-Michaelis, LHS, sixth place.
- CPR/First Aid – team consisting of Joey Banicki and Andrew Mendians, Manistee High School, third place
Other participating students included Olivia Andersen, LHS; Kylie Sailor, LHS; Aubrey Johnson, Onekama High School; Samantha Schaefer, Pentwater High School; Mayce Genter, LHS; Marissa Quillan, Mason County Central High School, Alec Lampen, Manistee High School; Charity Lawler, Pentwater High School, and Kiera Aberegg, MCC.
The students will compete against 3,000 students in the state tournament in Traverse City in April 2024.
The West Shore ESD CTE program is housed at West Shore Community College. It is a millage-supported program for high school juniors and seniors who attend schools in Mason, Lake, and Oceana counties. Students from Manistee County may also attend on a tuition basis.
