Garage destroyed by fire
GRANT TOWNSHIP — A garage was destroyed by fire — presumably caused by welding sparks — Friday, Dec. 15, at 8:30 a.m. on Cleveland Road near 88th Avenue, said Grant Township Fire Chief Dan Yost.
Firefighters saved the house located about 10 feet away from the detached garage from damage. “We were worried about the house catching fire,” said Yost.
“The gentleman said he was welding when the fire started.” Sparks from the welding equipment may have started the fire.
No vehicles were inside the garage, but the saddlebags on a Harley Davidson motorcycle parked outside melted from the blaze, said the chief.
The garage was not insured.
Shelby-Benona and Ferry Township fire departments assisted at the scene, and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office assisted with blocking the road.
Grant Township firefighters responded to a rollover crash shortly before being dispatched to the fire.
