Herrygers among ‘20 under 30’ winners

HART — Jenny Herrygers, a 2015 Hart High School graduate, recently won the Michigan Works West Central “20 under 30” award.

Herrygers, 26, works for the West Shore Educational Service District as an occupational therapy assistant serving special education students in Oceana County school districts.

“The best part of my day is working directly with my caseload students,” said Herrygers. “The job is versatile and keeps me on my toes working in multiple school districts.

“I love my students. They are truly gifted. They all come from different walks of life featuring varying abilities such as cognitive, emotional, speech and language, and other health impairments. As educators, we often view ourselves as the ‘teachers’ for this population, but we are in fact the ‘learners.’ They carry the gift of teaching true humanity.

“My role models taught me to work hard for what you want in life and remember that a smile goes a long way.”
