Large black bear spotted in Oceana County

The Oceana Conservation District shared photos of a black bear recently spotted in Oceana County.

“Some cool shots of a black bear in Oceana County!” states a post on the conservation district’s Facebook page. “Black bears are the only species of bear found in Michigan. Given the size, this one looks to be a male. Males are typically larger than females, solitary, with an average home range of 300 square miles. A black bear’s diet primarily consists of plants, berries and insects. Black bears are shy, elusive animals, usually flee when encountered, and are generally not a threat to humans. However, bears are also large and powerful and have been known to be aggressive if they feel threatened.”

The conservation district did not specify where in Oceana County the photos were taken.
