Firefighters quickly extinguish house fire

SHELBY — Firefighters from four departments responded to a house fire at 112 Elliott Street Wednesday, April 12, around 12:30 p.m.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by firefighters from Shelby-Benona, Hart, Grant Township and Ferry Township.

“They got it knocked down pretty quick,” said Shelby Assistant Fire Chief Mark Burmeister.

Emergency personnel observed smoke coming out of the eaves of the house when they arrived. “The house was filling up with smoke. My guys got here and they made an attack from the rear and knocked it down, and everybody was out when we got here. A working smoke detector alerted the occupants (and) without a doubt saved their lives.”

Although damage to the home’s exterior appears minimal, the interior received smoke and water damage, concentrated mainly in the bathroom and kitchen.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

“It was a quick knock-down, and our guys did a good job,” said Burmeister.

Shelby Police Department, Life EMS and Oceana County Emergency Management assisted at the scene.
