Winter storm could produce half a foot of snow

OCEANA COUNTY — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Oceana, Mason and Lake counties, predicting that 6 inches of snow could hit the area.

The winter storm watch is in effect beginning late Friday night, March 24, through Saturday afternoon, March 25.

In addition to snow, some light freezing rain is possible. “Total snow accumulations of greater than 6 inches possible,” states NWS. “Ice accumulations of around .10 of an inch possible. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. Precipitation will develop overnight Friday night and into Saturday morning. Much of the precipitation is expected to be snow over west central lower Michigan, but some freezing rain may mix in as well. Snowfall totals by Saturday evening have the potential to exceed 6 inches.”

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for a much larger area including Oceana, Mason and Lake counties as well as Muskegon, Newaygo, Osceola, Clare, Mecosta, Isabella, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson counties.
