Fire destroys Hesperia home

By Allison Scarbrough, Editor

HESPERIA — Five fire departments from Hesperia, Ferry Township, Fremont, White Cloud and Holton battled a large house fire at 83 Hoskins Street Friday afternoon, March 24.

The older two-story home located on the Newaygo County side of the village was approximately 2,500 square feet, said Hesperia Fire Chief Bob Eichenberg.

The two adult residents were not home when the fire started, said the chief, and no one was injured.

“The biggest challenge initially was getting enough manpower here and then the natural gas burning off on the other side was an issue, which DTE now has shut off.” Approximately 30 firefighters responded to the blaze. Ferry Township’s aerial ladder truck was attacking the fire from above.

A large cloud of smoke billowing from the scene could be observed from miles away.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known.
