Drivers injured in head-on crash on slick road

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Both drivers involved in a head-on crash Thursday, March 23, shortly before 8 a.m. on M 20 were transported by Life EMS to Trinity Health Mercy Hospital in Muskegon for non-life-threatening injuries, according to a preliminary accident report from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

“A surge of winter weather” caused several vehicle crashes in Oceana County Thursday morning, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. Minor injuries were reported in the other accidents.

A 71-year-old New Era woman was westbound on M 20 near Lakeview Drive in a 2017 Ford Escape in the sleet/hail when her SUV was struck head-on by a 2009 Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by a 42-year-old Shelby man, according to the report. The minivan driver was eastbound when he “lost control of his van” and “overcorrected and then went into the westbound lane,” hitting the SUV.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and neither drugs or alcohol are suspected in the crash.
