The Hart High School Quiz Bowl Team won the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division championship, qualifying for the state Quiz Bowl Finals in April.
“On Wednesday Feb. 15, the Hart Varsity Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Ludington for the final regular season matches of the year,” said Pirate Coach Brett Ramseyer. “Unfortunately, the team did not have their ‘A game’ in the first two matches, but champions find a way to win, and the Pirates earned the WMC Rivers Division championship with an undefeated 7-0 record in divisional play.
“In Match #1, the Pirates stumbled out the gate against Ravenna before finishing a strong first half lightning round to take control and then win the match 140-95. Match #2 pitted the top two teams of the division — Mason County Central vs. Hart. MCC closed the gap in a 25-5 drubbing in the first lightning round on zoological phyla before narrowing the contest to a 10-point separation with only the final lightning round remaining, where Hart flipped the script on the Spartans with a 30-15 edge to win 150-125.
“In the final match of the night, the Pirates executed a victory lap over Mason County Eastern in a 220-20 win that was not as close as the score sounds.”
The conference championship qualifies Hart for the state Quiz Bowl finals at Michigan State University in April.
Jesse Lenon led Hart with 210; Captain Abby Pretty totaled 75; Julia McTaggart gained 30; and Mia Perea tallied 20.
