Blizzard warning begins Thursday at 7 p.m.

‘Travel should be restricted to emergencies only.’

OCEANA COUNTY — A blizzard warning is in effect for Oceana County beginning Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. until Saturday, Dec. 24, at 4 p.m.

Other counties included in the blizzard warning are Mason, Muskegon, Lake, Newaygo, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, Barry, Van Buren and Kalamazoo.

Blizzard conditions are expected Friday with total snow accumulations of 10-20 inches and winds gusting as high as 45 mph.

“Travel will be very difficult to impossible,” states the National Weather Service. “Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will mainly impact Friday and Saturday travel.

“While the snow will start by mid afternoon on Thursday, the strong winds will not start until Friday morning. It is then that conditions will become dangerous due to low wind chills, blowing snow, and very low visibilities. Power outages are possible.

“Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”
