Respiratory therapist John Bottrell honored with Bee Award

John Bottrell, registered respiratory therapist at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital (formerly Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital), was selected as the Bee Award winner by Lynda Holcomb, RN who was named as the DAISY Award winner. The DAISY Award celebrates and honors extraordinary nurses. Each DAISY recipient gets to select someone who helps the nurse in caring for the patient. Holcomb named Bottrell as her “bee.” (See related story here.)

“I had no idea that I was going to be selected for the Bee Award,” said Bottrell. “I thought I was going to be speaking to a group of colleagues about the benefits of respiratory therapy for patients. When I got to the ceremony location, that’s when I learned that I had been selected by Lynda. I was surprised and happy to be honored in this way. Lynda is a great co-worker and I’m always happy to help our patients.”

“John is an excellent respiratory therapist,” said Holcomb. “I nominated him for the Bee Award because he is always very willing and ready to assist patients who need breathing support. In the Critical Care Unit, and especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our respiratory therapists were a highly important part of our treatment team. John is a steady presence, and I appreciate that about him. He’s so knowledgeable and kind, always willing to jump in and help. He’s very deserving of this award.”

Bottrell has worked at the Ludington hospital for 25 years as a respiratory therapist.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Nurses are nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, families and colleagues, and they are chosen by a committee of nurses at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital. Awards are given multiple times a year, with each honoree is given the opportunity to select another Corewell Health Ludington Hospital team member, in any department, who they feel has helped them in their role caring for patients.

The DAISY and Bee awards are given throughout Corewell Health.
