Obituary: Carla Sue Richards, 74, of Shelby
Carla Sue Richards, 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, November 11, 2022, in Ludington.
Carla, who went by her middle name Sue, was born to Robert and Marion Underhill on September 8, 1948, in Lansing. She grew up in Lansing across the street from her grandparent’s farm, a time she always spoke fondly of. She graduated as part of the first class to go through the Waverly School System in 1966 and went to work for the State of Michigan while also attending classes at Lansing Community College.
In 1968 she married David Richards and together they enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Along the way she attended Michigan State University, then transferred to Middle Tennessee State University where she earned both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education. She taught adult education and English as a second language in Tennessee and then in Shelby where she retired.
She was an avid reader and loved music. She sang in the choir, at weddings and led the music program for her church’s Sunday school and vacation Bible school programs many times. She played the piano and autoharp, enjoyed gardening, canning, baking and sewing. Church was a very important part of her life, and she was always involved in some activity or outreach, even traveling to Puerto Rico on a mission trip with the youth group.
She was a kind and loving woman whose faith and love of God influenced every area of her life. If you knew Sue, you heard about her Jesus. She set an example of a good and faithful servant to all who knew her.
She is survived by her devoted husband Dave, children Leanne (Warren) Van Overbeke, Mindi (Chris) Gerzseny, Gregg Richards and Dante Richards; foster daughter Noelle Wright, grandchildren, Nathan Proctor, Rebekah (Cory) Kelley, Evan Proctor, Bruce Van Overbeke, Jacob Van Buren, Zachery Gerszeny, Ashley Gerszeny and great-grandchildren, Liam Kelley and Rosie Teklinski.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at 11 a.m., at St. James Lutheran Church in Montague. A luncheon will follow the service. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
