LUDINGTON — Lynda Holcomb, RN, a nurse in the Critical Care Unit at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital, formerly Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital, was selected as the hospital’s latest recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

“I am very honored to have been nominated and selected for the DAISY Award,” Holcomb said. “I’m grateful to Mikala for nominating me and to all of my colleagues and leaders who help me to provide the very best care that I can. I love being a bedside nurse, and I love taking care of people. Nursing is one of those fields where you never work alone, and I’m grateful to my entire team for the support they give.”

Holcomb, who has worked at the Ludington hospital for 30 years, was nominated by Mikala Jewett, who works as a pharmacy technician at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital on behalf of a family member who had been hospitalized.

Jewett’s nomination form read in part, “Working side by side many times with Lynda, I have seen her show such care and compassion for every patient she has taken care of. My family recently experienced a loss of one of our extended family members. He was admitted to CCU for a short time. My family and I are very grateful for the sympathy and compassion Lynda showed every single one of us, especially her patient. Working next to Lynda often, I am thankful to see someone so dedicated to their job. Even on the hard days, she is truly a rockstar!”

Karen Soper, RN, inpatient nurse manager at Corewell Health Ludington Hospital has worked with Lynda for more than two decades at the hospital and has seen firsthand Lynda’s dedication to her patients. “Lynda has a wonderful bedside manner with patients,” said Soper. “She truly cares about their wellbeing and is a strong advocate for them. She also has a great sense of humor and is able to make people feel comfortable. Her competence and experience are clear to both patients and her colleagues, and we all appreciate Lynda’s work ethic.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Nurses are nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, families and colleagues, and they are chosen by a committee of nurses at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. Awards are given multiple times a year, with each honoree given a certificate and a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch.”

Online nominations can be completed at www.spectrumhealth.org/Ludington by clicking on the DAISY Award section at the bottom of the page. At the Ludington Hospital, nomination forms and boxes are also at all nurse stations, in lobbies and in the medical offices.
