Deputies make multiple OWI arrests over the holiday weekend.

1 driver attempts to flee, but crashes and suffers injuries.

Oceana County Sheriff Mast said his deputies made several operating while intoxicated arrests over the Labor Day weekend.

One weekend traffic stop turned into a police chase that resulted in injuries to the fleeing driver after he crashed his vehicle. An OWI charge is pending lab results against the 39-year-old Twin Lake man, said Sheriff Mast.

The incident occurred Friday, Sept. 2, around 11:20 p.m. when a traffic stop for an improper license plate was initiated by a deputy near the Hesperia Wesco convenience store. The suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, and the deputy called off the pursuit after 1.7 miles due to potential danger to other motorists. The deputy later came upon the crash scene on South Maple Island Road in Greenwood Township where “the vehicle rolled over multiple times and struck multiple trees,” said the sheriff. The Hesperia Fire Department responded to the scene to extricate the man from the wreckage with Jaws of Life equipment, and he was transported by Life EMS to an area hospital.

The man could also face charges of fleeing and eluding, operating without a license, operating without insurance and improper license plate.
