Walkerville man dies after being hit by vehicle in Mason County.

The man was standing outside his vehicle on Scottville Road after hitting a deer.

EDEN TOWNSHIP, Mason County — A 44-year-old Walkerville man died after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday, July 27, shortly after 6 a.m. on South Scottville Road near Sippy Road. Elmond Edward Hamilton III was standing outside his vehicle after hitting a deer when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“Upon arrival, deputies found a male subject with life-threatening injuries lying in the road being attended to by a nurse who happened upon the crash,” said Sheriff Cole.

“Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputies and first responders with Riverton and Custer Township fire departments assisted in the treatment until Life EMS arrived. This treatment included the application of a tourniquet to a serious leg injury. Despite the lifesaving measures, the victim was pronounced dead at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.

“The crash occurred after the victim had struck a deer while northbound on Scottville Road, and his vehicle was disabled in the roadway with one high beam headlight on and his airbags deployed. The victim was standing outside his vehicle when a southbound vehicle unknowingly approached the crash scene and struck the man standing alongside his vehicle.”

The driver of the second vehicle, who is a 28-year-old Ludington man, was not injured, said Cole.

Mason County Victim Services also assisted at the scene.

“The case remains under investigation by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team. At this time, neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.”
