GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 28-year-old man was shot dead at 8537 S. Robinhood Dr. Sunday, June 12, shortly after noon by a 32-year-old Muskegon man who fled the scene in a white pickup truck but was apprehended on southbound US 31 near the river flats in Muskegon County.
“We have one confirmed death, and we also have the suspect in custody,” said Lt. Shane Hasty of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office at the crime scene Sunday at 2 p.m. “We’ll know more once we get the search warrant and when the crime lab gets here. The ME (medical examiner) is going to be here also.
“A BOL (be on the lookout) was put out for the vehicle traveling southbound, and he was picked up in Muskegon County,” said the lieutenant. “We have the suspect; what we believe is the firearm involved; and we have the vehicle.” A handgun was used in the killing, said Hasty.
“There are three persons involved — the shooter, the deceased and the female involved.” At this point, the woman is considered a witness, but may also be a victim. “We may have an attempted homicide on her. We believe he was actually trying to cause harm to her. There was an incident here last night that was handled by Rothbury Police Department of an MDOP (malicious destruction of property) to a vehicle at the back of the residence.”
The victim was declared dead upon arrival, said Hasty. The 28-year-old woman was not injured. The shooting occurred outside the single-wide trailer in the back yard. Hasty could not immediately comment on where on his body the victim was shot or how many gunshot wounds he suffered.
“There is a love interest situation,” said Hasty. “The suspect is the former love interest, and the deceased is the new love interest.”
The woman lived in the trailer. “The new boyfriend was going to be residing here, and she was going to be going back and forth between her mother’s residence in the Shelby area.”
The suspect is lodged in the Oceana County Jail on an open murder charge. Bail has not been set. “He will be formally arraigned probably tomorrow afternoon,” said Hasty.
Michigan State Police are assisting in the homicide investigation. It’s an active crime scene, and residents should avoid the area.
Robinhood Drive is a quiet, wooded subdivision located off Webster Road just south of Rothbury.
