Shelby Township ParkShelby Township to break ground on community park.

SHELBY – Shelby Township officials have scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Community Park development Thursday, June 9, at 2:30 p.m.

The Community Park, which is located on Buchanan Road, near 72nd Avenue, is designed to promote the physical and psychological health of Oceana County residents by offering access to a well-maintained area to exercise and enjoy nature. It will be a meeting place for families and organizations to connect.

The ceremony will be hosted by the Shelby Township Board and the Park and Recreation Committee. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

“The park will aid the local economy by increasing the benefits of living in Oceana County,” states a Shelby Township press release. “While located in Shelby, the park will be within a short drive from neighboring communities and provide recreational opportunities for all residents in Oceana County. Areas that invest in increasing their residents’ quality of life are known to increase the townships’ attractiveness to future residents and businesses.”

“We believe that Shelby and Oceana County are a fantastic place to live and work, and we hope to invest in our community to showcase our pride in our area by investing in its residents’ quality of life,” a statement from the Park and Recreation Committee reads.

The park will be built in two phases. The first phase includes building the soccer fields, one softball field and the restrooms. The second phase will include the additional soccer fields, playscape, another softball field, and the pickle ball courts.

The park is funded through Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant money and private donations. However, the project is still short of the funding goal for the completion of Phase II. If you’re interested in donating to the park fund, contact the Shelby Township office.
