SHELBY — The Village of Shelby is hosting its first-ever Children’s Day Celebration this Saturday, April 30, from noon to 5 p.m. in downtown Shelby.

Kids can enjoy bounce houses, a climbing wall, a puppet show, costumed characters, arts and crafts, books, music, dancing and more. The activities are free.

Kids and parents are encouraged to wear their favorite costumes for the fun-filled event.

Shelby Village Councilman Damian Omness spearheaded the event, said Village Administrator Brady Selner.

“Damian really wanted to do something to engage the Hispanic community,” said Selner. “He spent some time in Mexico, and National Children’s Day is a really big event there every year. We felt that doing something up here would be a really fun way to engage and do something for the Hispanic community.”

Plans are to make Children’s Day an annual event in Shelby.

“A lot of the downtown businesses will be holding specials throughout that time,” said Selner.

Michigan Avenue between Third and Fourth streets will be closed for the event from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Hopefully, we get a good turnout and give the community something fun to do Saturday.”
