HART — The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating counterfeit $100 bills circulating in the local community.

“We are currently investigating three different $100 bills being passed around the county,” said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. “I would like to offer a word of advice to all the readers to please examine any incoming bills. If you look at them, you can easily see they are not real and they don’t feel like normal cash does either.”

Sheriff Mast said to the blue strip that is embedded into the weave of real bills is just printed on top of the fake ones being passed around.

One of the fake bills was being passed at the McDonald’s restaurant in Hart; another appeared at the Dollar General west of Hart; and a third was discovered with an inmate’s belongings at the Oceana County Jail, said Mast.

Be on the lookout for irregularities on the cash. “The strip that is usually embedded into the weave of the bill is just merely printed on top of it,” he said.
