BENONA TOWNSHIP — A 21-year-old Shelby man died in a single-vehicle crash Saturday, April 2, shortly after 12:30 a.m. on West Fish Road near South 44th Avenue, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

Hayden Zaverl, 21, died in the crash. Zaverl was among four passengers in a westbound 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck that went off the road “and hit a series of trees.” Zaverl was a backseat passenger on the driver’s side, said Mast.

“It is my unfortunate duty to advise you all that the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash from early this morning,” said Mast in a press release.

The pickup truck was driven by Ryan Allen, 21, of Shelby. It was “severely damaged,” said the sheriff.

Allen and three other passengers — Mackenzie Wagner, Courtnie Brown and Jillian Mitteer — were injured. Wagner was riding in the front, and Brown and Mitteer were riding in the backseat.

“The other passengers suffered injuries as well, which caused AeroMed to be dispatched to the scene to assist. More info on their conditions will follow up on Monday.

“Alcohol and speed are suspected factors in the accident as well, but it is still under investigation.”
