HART — A 27-year-old Caledonia man was sentenced to 93 days discretionary jail, with credit for one day served, and $400 in fines and costs in connection to a three-vehicle crash last summer that injured an elderly woman.
Harrison Grant Smith pleaded “no contest” in 78th District Court Monday, March 21, to reckless driving. His conviction is reportable to the Secretary of State. Smith will receive six points on his driver’s license and a 90-day license suspension, said Oceana County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Harrington.
“I believe there is pending civil litigation with this,” said Harrington.
There was no malicious intent to hurt the woman. “He committed a traffic violation that resulted in her being badly injured.”
The crash occurred the afternoon of July 13 in Weare Township. Smith ran the stop sign at the intersection of Oceana Drive and Monroe Road, said Harrington.
A misdemeanor count of moving violation causing serious impairment was dismissed. The maximum penalty is 93 days in jail.
The woman, who is in her 80s, was transported by Life EMS to an area hospital. The crash was investigated by the Michigan State Police.
A Jeep, a Chevrolet Impala and a Mazda were involved in the crash, which closed Oceana Drive in the vicinity of the scene. The injured woman was in the Impala, said MSP Trooper Margaret Gazaryants previously.
Four people were involved in the crash, and the others were treated at the scene.
Information about the accident victim’s current medical condition was not immediately available.
