Obituary: Joan Slocum, 79, of Hart.
Joan M. (Bird) Slocum, was born July 28, 1942, just minutes before her twin sister, Jean (deceased 2015), to the late Pearl and Gene Bird. The twins became big sisters to Dale Bird and the late Don Bird. On June 24, 1959, Joan married Kenneth G. Slocum, and they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary just days before Ken’s death in 2013.
Joan is survived by: their children, Curtis M. Slocum (Linda Bifulco Slocum) and Denise M. Jones (Lloyd “Gene” Jones, Jr); four wonderful grandchildren, whom they took great pleasure in teaching and spoiling: Alexandria A. Miedema (Travis), Morgan M. Slocum, Tad M. Jones (Aminda Horton), and Jacob A. Jones. (Mother to Alexandria and Morgan was her beloved daughter-in-law, Nancy K. Raymond Slocum Terryn (deceased 2014). In 2019, Joan proudly became great-grandma to Eli Horton and Easton Miedema. Her “grands and great-grands” were her greatest treasures.
Joan was also well known as “The Avon Lady”, co-owner of Courtland Bowling Lanes in Hart, and a fun and loving woman to family and friends “who told it like it was!”
Joan passed quietly and softly on February 23, 2022, at Oceana County Medical Care Facility, where she spent her last four years with kind and loving caregivers, many of whom became like a part of her family.
Family and friends will gather at a later date to celebrate Joan.
Memorial contributions will be gladly accepted by Denise Jones for Joan’s final expenses.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
