HART — A 24-year-old Muskegon man was sentenced to serve 15 months to 20 years in prison in 27th Circuit Court, Jan. 31, for a conviction of second-offense methamphetamine possession.

Jason Garth Spoelhof, of 948 Aurora Ave., pleaded guilty, Nov. 15. Spoelhof told Judge Robert D. Springstead that he has been using methamphetamine since he was 10 years old.

“I’ve been struggling with it since I was 10 years old,” said Spoelhof, “I didn’t have a family, and my parents kicked me out. I was troubled… I hung out with the wrong crowd. I always wanted to get out of it, but it was the only thing I knew.”

Spoelhof was initially charged with second-offense possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, which was dismissed when he pleaded to the lesser charge.

Spoelhof was caught with an ounce of meth during a traffic stop by Oceana County sheriff’s deputies in Colfax Township, Sept. 15, 2021, according to his testimony.

He was previously convicted of meth possession in Newaygo County in 2019.

Judge Springstead gave him credit for 137 days served in jail. He was also ordered to pay $198 in fines and costs.
