Man smashes through window, jumps off hotel balcony trying to escape police.
HART — A warrant has been issued for a 44-year-old Hart man who ran through a glass window, shattering it, and then jumped off a balcony at the Dunes Inn Express & Suites last month, said Hart Police Chief Juan Salazar.
“On Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, the Hart Police Department was dispatched to the 2000 block of Comfort Drive referencing a 44-year-old Hart man causing a disturbance within the building, yelling and banging on the walls within the swimming area,” states Chief Salazar in a press release.
The suspect was later located in a locked room. He was not a registered guest at the hotel, and the room he was in was not registered to anyone.
“Officers entered the room forcefully at which time the man ran from officers running directly through a sliding glass window, shattering the window, onto a balcony overlooking the swimming area.
“The man then jumped from the balcony onto the ground below.” He was tased and later subdued by officers.
The suspect was evaluated by Life EMS and transported to Mercy Health Partners Lakeshore Campus in Shelby. He suffered a broken pelvis and a broken heel from jumping from the balcony.
A Hart officer sustained a cut to the finger from the broken glass while trying to detain the suspect, Salazar said. No other injuries occurred.
A report was submitted to the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office, and a warrant has been issued for resisting/opposing police. The suspect has not yet been arrested as he remains hospitalized.
The Hart Police Department was assisted by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, the Shelby Police Department and Life EMS.
