13-year-old boy dies in dune crash.

A second 13-year-old boy hospitalized.

GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — Two 13-year-old Illinois boys crashed while riding quads at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Sunday, Oct. 10, around 1 p.m. One boy died, and the other was hospitalized, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

“At about 1 o’clock, deputies were dispatched to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes where there was a serious accident,” said Sheriff Mast. “Two quads were involved, and each quad had a 13-year-old male from Illinois. Both of them went over a hill at a high rate of speed and ‘endoed’ (went head-first into the ground) each of their quads. One of the 13-year-old boys has passed away from his injuries, and the other one has been taken to Muskegon Mercy for his injuries.”

Deputies continue to investigate the scene, said Mast, and he expects more details to be released Monday, Oct. 11.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family who has obviously suffered a very tragic incident on this October Sunday.”
