GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team explored an 80-year-old shipwreck in Lake Michigan near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes as a training exercise Thursday, Sept. 16.
Divers explored the Novadoc, which was a 253-foot-long steel freighter built in 1928.
“We have a shipwreck in our own backyard that our divers were able to explore and use their skills,” states a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page. “The ship sank in a storm on Nov. 11, 1940. The wreck that you are able to see today sits in 12-15 feet of water, just off from the sand dunes.
“We are thankful that our dive team is always available in a time of need.”
