Beware of phone scam involving caller identifying himself as a Hart police officer.
HART — The Hart Police Department is investigating a fundraising phone scam by a caller who claims to be a Hart police officer, said Hart Police Chief Juan Salazar.
“The caller identifies (himself) as an officer with the Hart Police Department and indicates he is contacting individuals around the area referencing a fundraising event,” said Chief Salazar.
The department received the complaint Saturday, Aug. 7.
“Law enforcement agencies do not make it a practice to call citizens and demand identifying information, nor do they ask for money or gift card payments by phone. If you receive this type of call, you are encouraged to hang up and call the agency to verify this information.
“If you feel you have been a victim of this scam or a scam similar to this, please contact the Hart Police Department at (231) 923-0851 or the Mason/Oceana Central Dispatch at (231) 869-5858.”
