GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — The driver of a 2007 Ford Focus that crashed head-on with a 2014 Ford Escape on Fox Road near 48th Avenue Friday afternoon, July 2, is a 67-year-old Norton Shores, Michigan woman, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

Critically injured, Irene Estell Young was airlifted following the crash near Silver Lake, which is a tourist hot spot busy with  traffic for the Fourth of July holiday.

“Mrs. Young was westbound and passing in a ‘no passing’ zone,” states the accident report. “Mrs. Young pulled out in front of another vehicle which was driven by Mr. Gunsell. The two vehicles collided in the eastbound lane.”

The other vehicle was driven by Floyd Dustin Gunsell, 45, of Portland, Michigan. Passengers were Jennifer Lynn Watson, 45, of Portland, Michigan and Richard Jay VanVuren, 46, of Fennville, Michigan. All three received minor injuries, according to the report.

The crash, which occurred at 4 p.m., was investigated by a Michigan State Police accident reconstructionist, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

According to dispatch information, a separate crash occurred in Silver Lake Friday around 1:30 p.m. A car and a moped collided at Termite Bridge and Lighthouse Drive causing injuries. No other information about that crash was immediately available.
