Obituary: Lynda Chmelik, 78, of New Era.

Lynda Carol Chmelik, 78, of New Era, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2021. She was born August 3, 1942 in Oklahoma City to Brown and Nell (Price) Gooch.  After graduating high school, Lynda went on to get her associate degree in dental hygiene from Grand Rapids Junior College. In 1975, Lynda married the late Rudy Chmelik.

Lynda was an accomplished artist. She specialized is folk art but loved many different media. She taught art and community education in Shelby schools and 4-H. When she wasn’t creating, Lynda enjoyed gardening. After retirement, Lynda and Rudy enjoyed wintering near Everglade City, Florida. On their trips south, Lynda and Rudy would collect antiques and they had a large collection in several barns on their property. When the barns got too full, they would open the barn doors and have a sale.

Lynda is survived by her two sons, Michael Hennrick of Whitehall and Philip (Jane) Hennrick of New Era; her grandchildren, Lyndon (Nick) Green, Tristen, Alexandra, and Nolan; her great-grandchildren, Korbin, Nixon, and Nora; and her brother, Philip (MaryEllen) Gooch.

Besides her parents, Lynda was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 4 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 5631 Stony Lake Rd., New Era. Family will greet friends starting at 3 p.m. 

Memorial contributions in Lynda’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
