Kalkaska woman lodged in prison for CSC, child abuse pleads guilty to break-in.

HART — A 27-year-old Kalkaska woman convicted of second-degree child abuse and third-degree criminal sexual conduct added another felony to her criminal record when she pleaded guilty Monday, Feb. 22, in 27th Circuit Court to breaking and entering with intent.
Kaytelin Hazel-Keefer Carlson appeared in court for a pretrial hearing via Zoom video conferencing from the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Carlson is serving five to 15 years in prison for the Kalkaska County convictions, which are unrelated to the Oceana County case, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon.
In exchange for her plea, she will serve a term of 120 days. Her co-defendant Troy James Hern-Slocum of Hesperia received the same sentence last August. The break-in occurred during the summer of 2019 at an unoccupied house on South 184th Avenue in Greenwood Township, according to testimony.
“What was the purpose?” asked Judge Robert D. Springstead.
“To take things to sell,” said Carlson. She said Hern-Slocum went inside the house and stole items while she stood outside as the lookout. She also testified that she helped Hern-Slocum load the items.
For fear of getting caught, they left the stolen property behind when they left the area, Carlson testified.
Sentencing is set for April 19 at 9:40 a.m.
Breaking and entering with intent is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
