NEWFIELD TOWNSHIP — Several pigs perished in a barn fire early Saturday morning, Feb. 20, at 2264 S. 204th Avenue, according to Hesperia Fire Chief Bob Eichenberg.

The approximate 60-by-60 foot barn is a “total loss”  said Eichenberg.

In addition to the Hesperia Area Fire Department, firefighters from Walkerville, Ferry Township and Fremont assisted.

Firefighters and the owner were able to rescue some of the pigs and a few calves from the blaze, said Eichenberg.

A neighbor alerted the owner that the barn was on fire, and the owner called 911, said the chief.

Firefighters were first called to the scene at 2:04 a.m., he said.
