The Land: Asparagus Day March 11 goes virtual.

The Land is series telling the stories about local agriculture. It is a presentation of Peterson Farms, Inc., www.petersonfarmsinc.com.

HART – Michigan State University (MSU) Extension and the Michigan Asparagus Industry Research Farm Advisory Committee have scheduled this year’s Oceana Asparagus Day for Thursday, March 11.

This will be the first ever virtual, online-only Asparagus Day due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions. This workshop brings together MSU researchers and industry representatives from inside and outside Michigan to update growers on the latest challenges and opportunities in asparagus production.

Topics of discussion will include recent international trade actions in other industries; a guest speaker sharing research from the British industry; a presentation on asparagus fertility; updates from MACMA-asparagus and the MAEAP program, and the latest MSU and industry research on disease and crop management.

“Our industry views its partnership with researchers at MSU as an investment that will keep West Michigan asparagus production viable for the long run,” said Ben Werling, Michigan State University Extension educator. “Oceana Asparagus Day, which is organized by both these groups, is a testimony to this commitment.”

Three pesticide recertification credits (private core, commercial core or 1B), and Certified Crop Advisors’ Continuing Education Units have been awarded for Asparagus Day.

The 2021 Oceana Asparagus Day will be held online on March 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no registration fee for this event. To register, visit bit.ly/asparagusday2021, or call the Oceana County MSU Extension office at 231-873-2129.
