HART — A 37-year-old Muskegon man was sentenced to 90 days in jail in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Jan. 25, for stealing several items from a hotel room at the Dunes Express Inn & Suites on Comfort Drive in Hart last year.
Elessie Gabriel Walker, of 3232 McArthur Rd., pleaded guilty to larceny in a building last November. Walker testified before Judge Robert D. Springstead that he stole a TV, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, alarm clock, comforters, pillows and a bath mat from a room.
Walker’s attorney, Matthew Kacel, said the theft was attempt at “getting back at his ex,” because the room was rented in her name.
Kacel said his client’s behavior was immature, but explained that he has “grown up tremendously” since them. “It was a stupid thing that he did, and he knows that.”
Walker admitted that he hasn’t made good decisions in the past. “I did a lot of boneheaded things. I’m not making (any) excuses for what I did.” He also said that he’s gotten his life together now. “My life has done a 180.”
Walker received credit for one day served in jail and was ordered to serve two years probation.
A total of $1,116 in restitution was ordered.
Walker has four prior felonies and 13 misdemeanors, said Judge Springstead.
Sentencing guidelines in the case are 0-11 months, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon.
Walker appeared in court via Zoom video conferencing due to COVID-19.
