Couple loses home in Christmas morning fire.

By Allison Scarbrough, Editor.

SHELBY — Jose Anzaldua and his wife lost their home at 27 West First St. due to a fire on Christmas morning, said Shelby-Benona Fire Chief Jack White.

“From my understanding, the people do not have insurance, and at this point we don’t have a cause,” said White.

The fire was reported at 5 a.m. “They were awake and discovered it,” said Chief White.

“The fire started in the back of the house; spread through the house into the attic and into the basement. The back of the roof collapsed. The house is pretty much a total loss. There were no injuries.”

White said he notified the American Red Cross and the Crystal Valley Care Fund to assist the couple.

The 1,000-square-foot single story home had a wooden frame and was over 100 years old, said White.

“There were no working smoke detectors,” he said.

Firefighters from Hart, Shelby, Grant Township and Ferry Township battled the blaze.

The scene was cleared at about 10 a.m.
