Shelby man who accosted 2 girls for sex faces jail term, deportation.
By Allison Scarbrough, Editor.
HART — A 30-year-old Shelby man pleaded “no contest” in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Dec. 14, to two counts of accosting a child for immoral purposes.
Adan Rivera-Rodriguez faces a jail term of up eight months and deportation to Mexico.
Rivera-Rodriguez was driving a car in the Village of Shelby last September and “had contact with a 15-year-old female and a 14-year-old female,” said Judge Robert D. Springstead. “While in the vehicle, he told them he would pay them for a fun time and would pay them money for sex.”
A video shows that the girls “repeatedly told the defendant no and told him to leave,” said Judge Springstead. “The girls became afraid and ran home and called police.”
“He approached them in a vehicle and made a lewd offer,” said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. No physical contact was made.
“This may have an affect on your legal status in the United States,” said Springstead. “It could cause you to be deported or to not lawfully enter the United States in the future.”
Rivera-Rodriguez testified in court Monday through Spanish translator Kathy Fuehring.
Rivera-Rodriguez also faces up to two years probation for the conviction.
“The ‘no contest’ plea shields my client from any civil liability,” said defense attorney Ryan Good.
“He was possibly intoxicated at the time of the incident,” added Bizon.
The status conference hearing was held via Zoom video conferencing due to COVID-19.
Sentencing is set for Feb. 8 at 10:15 a.m.
