PENTWATER TOWNSHIP — The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible theft of two vintage World War II rifles from the Pentwater VFW Hall.

An M1 Garand rifle and a Japanese rifle were reported stolen to the sheriff’s office Nov. 9, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. They were taken from a locked safe at the VFW Hall located at 8440 Business Route US 31.

Only a small number of people have access to the locked room and safe where the guns were stored, said Sheriff Mast. “We’ve been trying to communicate with the VFW members to see if someone borrowed them.” If they were borrowed, then the guns need to be immediately returned. “If they are not returned in a timely fashion. We have to consider them stolen.”

The vintage guns had been on display in the hall, but were moved to the gun safe recently due to moisture issues.

The collectible guns went missing some time between Oct. 21 and Nov. 7, said Sheriff Mast.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Mark Hiddema at the sheriff’s office at 231-873-2121.
