Several people hurt in recent dune crashes.
GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — Several people were injured in four separate crashes in the ORV area of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes during the Fourth of July weekend, according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.
The most recent crash occurred Monday, July 6, shortly before 11:30 a.m. when a 26-year-old Lapeer, Michigan man was riding a 2000 Kawasaki KX250 near the drag strip, according to a sheriff’s office report. The driver lost control of the dirt bike and was ejected hurting his back. The man had a suspended driver’s license and was cited. The report states that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, and preliminary breath test (PBT) results indicated the man’s blood alcohol content was .04, the report states. He was wearing helmet. Medical treatment was sought at Mercy Health Partners (MHP) Hackley Campus in Muskegon.
On Saturday, July 4, a crash occurred shortly before 7 p.m. involving a 2019 Polaris RZR driven by a 29-year-old Lemont, Illinois woman. The driver was not injured but her passenger — a 29-year-old Tinley Park, Illinois woman — suffered minor injuries, according to the accident report.
“Unit 1 was traveling in the directional area of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, the report states. “Vehicle went over a hill and upon coming down the opposite side struck an embankment of sand causing the passenger to be ejected from the vehicle.”
It was not known if they were wearing helmets.
A crash occurred Friday, July 3, shortly after 3 p.m. involving a 27-year-old Ypsilanti, Michigan man operating a 2018 Kodiak ATV, the report states.
“Driver advised he was operating a quad in the Silver Lake ORV area,” the states the report. “Driver advised he was traveling too fast down a hill and struck an embankment of sand causing his face to hit the handle bars of the quad. Driver had minor injuries to his chin.”
The man, who was wearing helmet in the crash, sought treatment at MHP Lakeshore Campus in Shelby, the report states.
Another crash occurred Friday shortly before 9:30 a.m.
Minor injuries were reported after a 2018 Polaris RZR 1000 driven by a 30-year-old Montague man crashed. Passengers were a 38-year-old Rothbury man and a 9-year-old Rothbury boy.
“Vehicle #1 was southbound in the directional zone when the driver went over a hill too fast and the vehcle rolled over causing injury to the occupants,” the report states.
The child was transported by Life EMS to Lakeshore hospital, the report states. All three involved were wearing helmets.
