County board chairman urges community members to wear masks.
HART — In a press release issued Monday, June 29, Oceana County Board of Commissioners Denny Powers urges community members to wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“As businesses and other venues move closer to their normal pre-COVID-19 operations, it remains important for the overall public health of our community to wear face coverings,” states the press release. “The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has consistently informed us that segments of our population are at greater risk of severe illness from the virus, particularly the elderly and people with certain underlying medical conditions.
“It’s also important to remember that some people with the virus do not show any symptoms related to it, so wearing a face covering helps to ensure that people within close proximity of others, such as in a retail store, are minimally exposed when we speak to them, cough, or sneeze, believing symptoms may just be seasonal allergies flaring up.
“During a recent public meeting, the board of commissioners heard from a citizen who expressed concerns about people not wearing masks. Research is ongoing, but as recently as June 26, the CDC recommends wearing a face covering in public settings, particularly in places where social distancing is difficult to maintain.
“Commissioner Denny Powers, chairperson of the Board of Commissioners, urges use of masks because of the CDC’s recommendation. Powers said, ‘It’s not just a courtesy to others for us to wear a mask. Like the CDC has said, it can help prevent spreading the virus if a person has it but doesn’t know it.’
