Salesman who swindled clients out of over $3,000 sentenced to jail.

HART — A 59-year-old Remus man who swindled three local businesses out of over $3,000 was sentenced in 27th Circuit Court Monday, June 1, to serve four months in jail.

Michael Gene Klein, of 12883 55th Ave., was selling cleaning products to local businesses, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. “Once he got the check, he would take off,” Bizon said.

Klein, who is convicted of common fraud, was ordered to pay over $3,000 in restitution. “There are similar issues in multiple areas of the state,” Bizon said of Klein’s multi-county scam. He is currently lodged in the Gratiot County Jail. He appeared in court Monday via polycom teleconfercing due to COVID-19 precautions.

Klein received credit for 93 days served in jail.

Common law fraud is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
