PENTWATER — A collaborative community effort has created an eye-catching and unique tribute to the Pentwater High School Class of 2020.

Banners with the seniors’ photos were put on display on the lamp posts along Hancock Street in downtown Pentwater Thursday, May 7. An anonymous donor paid for them.

The banners feature the Pentwater school color of purple and the Falcon school mascot.

High school seniors and their parents across the nation are challenged by unprecedented school closures and graduation cancelations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The small community of Pentwater wanted to do something to honor its 19 Class of 2020 graduates. School and village officials and community members worked together to make it happen.

The banners are expected to stay on display into the summer, said Pentwater Public Schools Superintendent/Principal Scott Karaptian. When they are taken down, the banners will be given to the students to have as a keepsake.

“We would like to thank the Village of Pentwater and Mike Russell for hanging the banners; Dr. Claudia Ressel-Hodan, village council (DDA), for helping with logistics; Mr. Dan Selahowski and Mr. Gene Davidson for their help in fixing the banner hangers; Sarah Merten, Shelly Hugo for the idea and helping organize; Bethany Bringedahl and Dreamweaver of Ludington for making the banners; and finally thank you to a very special anonymous donor for paying for these amazing banners,” Karaptian said.

The Pentwater Class of 2020 includes: Jaxon Anderson, Mackenzie Breitner, Terra Cluchey, Cassie Cormany, Makaylah Cornelisse, Seth Davila, Hanna Hartline, Adam Hendrixon, Mika Hugo, Kyle James, Michael Kenney, William Kolenda, Nash Lentz, Gannon McDonough, Julien Nyberg, Cienna Ruggles, Mercedy Sayles, Mitchell Smith and Emme Tarnowski.
