GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP — A 25-year-old Muskegon man was tased by an Oceana County sheriff’s deputy after he allegedly fled from the officer on foot following a high-speed chase with a stolen vehicle Sunday, March 29, around 12:30 a.m., according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.
The deputy saw a white 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in the ditch on Skeels Road and stopped to provide motorist assistance, Mast said. The deputy noticed a license plate was not affixed to the truck.
The driver took off down the road in an attempt to flee from the officer, reaching high speeds of up 76 mph on rain-slicked roads. The driver lost control of the truck, which began fishtailing and got stuck in a yard on Brickyard Road in Muskegon County, Sheriff Mast said.
The suspect then took off running on Brickyard Road and fell in the mud. The man was tased twice before “full body lockup” was achieved, Mast said. The Fremont Police Department assisted.
Police contacted the owner of the truck to find out that the suspect had stolen the truck, but it had not yet been reported stolen.
The suspect was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding police, operating while intoxicated, driving while license suspended and open intoxicants. A felony charge of unlawful driving away of an automobile (UDAA) or car theft is pending in Muskegon County. A felony charge of possession of a stolen vehicle is pending in Oceana County.
No injuries were reported.
