
SMS Science Olympiad Team
Success adds up for SMS science, math teams.
SHELBY — The Shelby Middle School Science Olympiad Team finished first at regionals, advancing to state, and the Math Counts Team took fourth place at regionals.
Six Shelby Middle School students competed against Muskegon area schools in the regional Math Counts competition at Muskegon Community College, Feb. 21.
Tiger Leah Stevens placed sixth out 64 participants and qualified to advance to the state championship competition. Stevens, an eighth grader, will travel to Saginaw Valley State University Saturday, March 14, to compete for a state championship against the other individual state qualifiers. Math Counts coaches are eighth grade math instructor Maria Salisbury and math interventionist Izamar Pu.

The Shelby Middle School Science Olympiad team, coached by eighth grade science instructor Rebecca Harvell, competed in regionals at Mid Michigan Community College in Harrison, Feb. 29. The team finished in first place and will travel to Michigan State University Saturday, April 25, to challenge other state-qualifying teams seeking to earn a state championship.
“Shelby Middle School has continued a strong tradition in the science and math fields of study through innovative classroom experiences and regular participation in extracurricular opportunities such as Science Olympiad, Math Counts, and You Be the Chemist,” said SMS Principal Mark Olmstead. “All students in grades 6-8 take a marking period of computer science and coding using Code.org instructional materials so that students are exposed to technology that prepares them for the modern workforce. Best of luck to all students in their respective upcoming state finals competitions.”
