HART – A 38-year-old Fremont man was sentenced to one day in jail with credit for one day served along with 10 months probation in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Feb. 24, in connection to the theft of a Department of Natural Resources snowmobile last May.
Peter John Terveer, of 231 W. Michigan Ave., pleaded “no contest” to receiving and concealing stolen property $1,000-$20,000, Dec. 2, 2019. Terveer also faced a felony charge of larceny $1,000-$20,000, which was dismissed in a plea agreement.
The snowmobile was being used to groom Nordic ski trails at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex. It was stolen from a mechanic’s home in Oceana County’s Greenwood Township. The mechanic’s trailer was also stolen.
The 2012 Ski-Doo was loaned to the sports complex by the DNR.
Terveer received a delayed sentence. If he abides by the terms of his probation, the felony conviction will be dismissed and he can plead to a misdemeanor, said Judge Robert D. Springstead.
Terveer has medical issues and appeared in court using a walker. When asked if his medical status played a role in his probationary sentence, Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon said it was considered. “The property was recovered and returned,” Bizon said. “It was found in his possession, but he turned it in. He claimed he didn’t know it was stolen. We considered that as well.”
