HART – A 17-year-old student faces a felony of possession/sale of a taser and a misdemeanor of weapons–free schools – possessing a weapon – for alleging carrying a stun gun and a knife at Pentwater High School, Sept. 16.
Kyle James, of 7320 S. Stiles Rd., Riverton Township in Mason County stood mute to the charges and entered a “not guilty” plea in 78th District Court, according to court records. James is scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m.
James was arrested by the Pentwater Police Department, Sept. 18, after a warrant was issued charging him with carrying a stun gun and a knife with a 4-inch-long blade on school property. He was lodged in the Oceana County Jail and posted 10 percent of $1,500 bond.
“The investigation did not uncover any evidence that there was a threat to Pentwater students or staff by the suspect,” stated a post on the Pentwater Police Department’s Facebook page.
James was immediately suspended from school. He remains out of school on a “long-term suspension,” said Superintendent Scott Karaptian. Although, he has not been expelled.
“It was a series of unfortunate events that no school wants to go through,” said Karaptian. “Protocol was followed swiftly by school staff and law enforcement, and no one was in any danger. The items were never brandished, and no one was threatened.”
