Woman, 79, falls asleep at wheel, hits tree.

GOLDEN TOWNSHIP – A 79-year-old Needles, California woman told police she fell asleep at the wheel before crashing into a tree on 56th Avenue and First Street in Mears Monday, Sept. 9, shortly after 10 a.m., according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

The woman was pinned inside the 2003 Acura minivan she was driving and had to be extricated by Hart Area Fire Department’s Jaws of Life, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. She was transported to Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus in Muskegon by Life EMS, Mast said.

“Driver advised she had not been sleeping well lately and fell asleep at the wheel prior to crash,” states the narrative of the report. “Driver advised not awaking until her vehicle struck the tree.”

The woman was wearing a seat belt.
