BENONA TOWNSHIP – A male subject suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday, May 4, shortly before 11 a.m. when the paraglider he was operating crashed in a field on 56th Avenue north of Stony Lake Road.

The male subject, who was the lone occupant of the aircraft, was transported by Life EMS to Mercy Health Partners Lakeshore Campus in Shelby, said Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mike Fillips.

“There were a couple witnesses who watched it happen,” said Fillips. Few details are being immediately released as authorities are contacting the crash victim’s family. The sheriff’s office will issue a press release likely later today, Fillips said.
The aircraft is a Destiny motorized paraglider. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been contacted, Fillips said.

The Shelby-Benona Fire Department and Grant Township First Responders also responded to the scene. The crash was dispatched at 10:42 a.m.
