Weight restrictions to be lifted April 22.

HART – Weight restrictions will be lifted on all Oceana County Road Commission roads Monday, April 22, at 6 a.m.

Newaygo County weight restrictions will be lifted the same day and time.

The weight and speed restrictions are imposed in an effort to prevent potholes. The restrictions – sometimes called ‘frost laws’ – began March 8.

As frost melts beneath a paved road, the roadbed turns wet and spongy because water is trapped between the pavement and the remaining ice layer beneath. When trucks and heavy equipment travel over a layer of concrete or asphalt that isn’t well supported beneath, permanent cracks can occur.
